St. Augustine Lighthouse
St. Augustine’s historic lighthouse
is one of the most famous
attractions in all of St. Augustine.
Located on the northern end of
Anastasia Island, the St. Augustine
Lighthouse, as it stands today, was
completed in 1874. The
original St. Augustine lighthouse
was actually located a bit further
out in the Atlantic, and its tower
crashed into the ocean in 1880, a
few years after the newer lighthouse
was completed. Visitors to the St.
Augustine Lighthouse can go atop the
highest point in the tower and enjoy
panoramic views of the sea and
nearby St. Augustine beach.
The St Augustine Lighthouse is most
noted for its reports of paranormal
activity and unique history.
Visitors and workers have allegedly
heard voices and seen shadows and
figures of two little girls. The two
apparitions are reported to be the
ghosts of the two daughters of
Hezekiah Pittee, who served as
Superintendent of Lighthouse
Construction during the 1870's. It is
believed that the two girls drowned
in a tragic accident that took place
during the construction, and
sightings prompted SciFi
Channel’s show, Ghost Hunters to
feature the lighthouse on one of
their shows.
Tours of St. Augustine Lighthouse
are given each day, and visitors to
the tower can also browse the
museum, gift shop, and even the
former light keepers' living
quarters. If you are interested in
the ghost stories surrounding the
St. Augustine Lighthouse, the museum
offers Dark Side of the Moon tours
where visitors can learn the real
facts about the history of the
lighthouse and those who have died
on the site.
