Alligator Farm
The St. Augustine Alligator Farm is
one of the oldest zoological
attractions in Florida, and is
listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. Visitors have been
coming here since 1893 to see large,
dangerous, and uncommon reptiles in
captivity. It all began when George
Reddington and Felix Fire began
collecting alligators they found on
Anastasia Island, and by the end of
1910 the Farm had become an
established Florida attraction.
After a series of fires, the
Alligator Farm relocated closer to
the city of St. Augustine, and in
1937 Reddington sold the attraction
to W. I. Drysdale and F. Charles
Usina. The new owners promoted the
facility both locally and
nationally, improved the exhibits,
and constructed new buildings.
Before long the attraction became
more than just an alligator farm,
it also included ostriches,
crocodiles, Galapagos Tortoises, a
variety of monkeys and birds, as
well as many examples of native
Florida wildlife. Scientific
research and basic facts about the
reptiles collected from the
Alligator Farm have been published
in trade journals, scientific
publications, and popular magazines.
There have been a number of
additions and improvements to the
Alligator Farm over the last few
decades. In the late 1970’s a nature
trail was added, as well as a roofed
theater and an open amphitheater for
formal exhibitions of snakes and
alligators including lectures on
habits and behavior. In 1989, The
American Association of Zoological
Parks and Aquariums extended
accreditation to the St. Augustine
Alligator Farm, an honor reserved
for facilities recognized for the
quality of their collections and the
care afforded them. Today, the park
has expanded to include the “Land of
Crocodiles”, where visitors can see
all 23 of the world’s crocodilians
exhibited in individual habitats.
